PO MOSSEL

The Netherlands Institute for Fishery Research (RIVO) has a main laboratory in IJmuiden, and a Centre for Shellfish Research in Yerseke. RIVO has a long history in fishery research and has expertise of biology and ecology of both marine and freshwater fishes. At the main laboratory research also focuses on chemistry, microbiology, and technology of fisheries. The Centre for Shellfish Research is located in the centre of the Dutch shellfish economy, and focuses on population dynamics and spatial distribution of shellfish in Dutch coastal waters, carrying capacity studies and modelling, and applied studies for the shellfish industry and the Dutch government. The Centre is also responsible for monitoring shellfish quality, i.e. pathogenic micro-organisms and biotoxins. Annual surveys are carried out for the assessment of total shellfish stocks in the Wadden Sea, the Delta area and the coastal zone, delivering a large database on occurrence and distribution of about 25 species of benthic fauna. RIVO is part of Wageningen University and Research Centre.

Dr A.C. Smaal is a specialist in shellfish physiology, ecology and modelling, has over 20 years of research experience and is (co-)author of over 50 scientific papers. He was involved in EU projects TROPHEE, ECOFLAT, PhaSE, and was co-ordinator of the EU-FAIR project ESSENSE. As the head of the RIVO-Centre for Shellfish Research he is responsible for a research team of 15 members.

RIVO are involved in historical data collection, field work and collections physiological measurements and modelling, carrying capacity and shellfish research.
